Sunny Side Up!

“This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”
Psalm 118:24 (NKJV)

When I was growing up, my mother would ask my dad how he wanted his eggs cooked. Invariably he replied, “sunny side up.” My dad enjoyed the bright yellow yolk that remained on top of his sunny side up eggs.

Do we live each day “sunny side up?” A smiling face, a cheerful heart, a positive outlook, and a joyful attitude: does that describe us? What are we like when we get up in the morning? What is our disposition during the day? Are we happy and cheerful, or grumpy and gloomy? Do we speak kind, gentle and encouraging words, or do harsh words snap from a sharp tongue?

It is not always easy to be “sunny side up.” Others may rub us the wrong way and we feel angry and cross. When we are tired or don’t feel well, even little things may irritate us. The world around us is full of negative news: crime, disasters, and dangers abound on the daily news. There seem to be so many things that would rob us of a sunny disposition.

With the Lord’s help we can overcome these obstacles. Every day we should remind ourselves that “this is the day the Lord has made.” He made it and gave it to us as a gift. He gives us life and breath, and “we will rejoice and be glad in it.”

It is also important to daily count our blessings. As the hymn says: “Count your many blessings, name them one by one…” We have so much to be thankful for: family, friends, food, clothing, shelter, health. Keep naming all the blessings you can think of. Write them down and post them where you’ll see them each day. It is hard to complain or be grouchy when we recall our many blessings.

Decide to live each day “sunny side up.” Not only will you be happier, but you’ll bring sunshine into the lives of those around you.

Here are some more verses to look up and remember:
Romans 12:8
Proverbs 15:13
Psalm 16:11
James 1:2
John 15:11

Here is a project you might enjoy to help you remember this lesson:

Draw a picture or make a poster for your room of a bright, sunny day.
Write this caption on it: “Sunny Side Up!” Add one of the Bible verses and post it where you’ll see it often during the day. ~ or ~

Make a fabric picture. Cut the sun, flowers and other parts of your picture from felt. Glue them to a larger piece of felt or other sturdy fabric to make a banner for your room.
