Inside Out

“A man’s heart reflects the man.” Proverbs 27:19 (NIV)

Have you ever put on some piece of clothing inside out? You look in the mirror and see that the seams and the tags are showing. So, you take it off, and turn it right side out. We don’t like the wrong side to show.

Sometimes this is true in our spiritual lives, too. We want people to see our “right” side. We want them to see only good attitudes and good behavior.

But every once in the while, we get turned “inside out.” Something happens and suddenly we display a short temper, or say some cutting, hurtful words, or we complain.

Most of the time, these things have not been showing; we have kept them hidden inside. But the real test of our character comes when we are provoked, or when some difficult trial comes our way. During times like these, our true character will be manifested.

What is on the inside in your life? We need to examine our heart, our mind, and our thoughts. Our outer appearance and behavior may look fine. But what are we thinking about? Are we murmuring or complaining? Is there rebellion in our heart? Are we looking for ways to strike back or get even? Are we harboring jealousy and striving to get what we want at all costs? Are we fearful and anxious?

These are just a few of the inner attitudes people struggle with. Sooner or later what is on the inside comes out. We need to examine our inner life and let the Word of God renew those areas that we know do not please our Lord.

Read God’s word every day. Hebrews 4:12 tells us: “The word of God is living and active. Sharper than any doubled-edged sword… it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (NIV)

God speaks to us through His word and will show us the true condition of our inner life. Do your thoughts and attitudes measure up to His word? If not, write down some verses to help you overcome that attitude. For example, if you complain, look up verses on thankfulness. If you worry, look up verses on trusting God. Write them down and meditate on these each day.

Ask the Lord in prayer to help you gain the victory over anything that does not reflect the character of our Lord Jesus Christ. Then when trials come and we find ourselves turned “inside out,” our Christ-like character will shine forth.
