Hurry & Worry“Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Matt. 6:34 (NKJV)
There once were two sisters who looked so much alike that many people thought they were twins. They were not, but they were very close in age and they often wore the same outfits so it was easy to see why people thought they might be twins. Their family said they were like two bookends, whenever you saw one, the other was not far behind.
The sisters had many friends and they often went visiting to one house or another. They enjoyed spending the day with their friends, but they especially liked to stay overnight. The only problem was, no one ever seemed to get any rest when the sisters were there. Their visit always started out okay, but soon everyone in the house became tired, irritable and impatient. In fact, when they spent the night, it was not unusual for some of the family members to awaken with a headache or stomachache. For the most part, no one got any sleep when the sisters stayed overnight.
By the next morning, everyone was eager for the sisters to go home, but it always seemed difficult to get them to leave. And once they had left, it took some time for everyone to get back to normal and feel good again.
You see, the sisters, Hurry and Worry, caused everyone around them to fret and rush around all of the time. Worry constantly dwelled on things she was afraid might happen to her or to others. All she could talk about were worrisome things. Her sister, Hurry, was always in such a rush that Worry was sure they would forget something, or get into a traffic jam or a wreck on the way, or at the very least, be late. All those worrisome thoughts just made Hurry try to go that much faster, and make everyone else go faster, too.
You can just imagine what it was like living in the same house with Hurry and Worry. Rarely was there time to relax or rest. Because of that, they were often sick and that just gave Worry something else to fret about! If you had asked them, they would have told you they were happy enough, but the truth is, there was not much joy in their house.
They were really attractive sisters, but if you entertained them in your home, you soon found yourself hurrying and worrying, too. And that was difficult to stop.
Why do we hurry through life? Often it is because we have too much to do and we worry that we won’t get it all done. Is that how Jesus lived? In the Gospels, do we see him hurrying through each day? Here is what Jesus said about worry:
“Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Matt. 6:34 (NKJV)
Some people worry about the past, but that is over and we cannot change it. Some people worry about the future. We don’t know for sure what will happen tomorrow; there’s no need to worry about it today. Instead we need to trust the Lord and take our concerns to Him.
When Worry & Hurry come to visit you, don’t open the door! They can ruin your health and steal your joy. Instead, go to the Lord in prayer and remember how much He loves you and cares for you.
