Heaven’s VisionThe king of Syria “sent horses and chariots and a great army there, and they came by night and surrounded the city. And when the servant of (Elisha) arose early and went out, there was an army, surrounding the city with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, ‘Alas, my master! What shall we do?’ So Elisha answered, ‘Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’ And Elisha prayed, and said, ‘Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.’ Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” 2 Kings 6:14-17
This story takes place during the days of the prophet Elisha. The king of Syria was making war against Israel and he was especially angry with Elisha because the Lord would warn His people by telling Elisha where the Syrians would strike. The king of Syria was determined to get Elisha and so, at night, he sent horses and chariots and a great army to surround where Elisha was.
The next morning Elisha’s servant went outside. Imagine his surprise when he looked up and saw a great army surrounding them, ready to attack! So the servant cries out to Elisha, “Oh, my master, what shall we do?” All he sees is the army arrayed against them.
But Elisha says, “Do not fear.” That seems like a surprising thing to say when you see the enemy all around you about to strike! But Elisha had a bigger vision. He saw the enemy, for sure. But he saw more than that. He says, “For those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
What did he mean? They didn’t have as many people as the army surrounding them. Then Elisha prays: “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” And the Bible tells us that the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw that the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around them.
The Lord had sent heavenly hosts and he delivers the enemy into Elisha’s hands by striking them with blindness. They would not even need to fight. Elisha had a bigger vision than his servant. He could see God’s hand in the situation and His larger purpose. He saw more than just what was obvious to the eye, because he had “heaven’s vision.”
Just as Elisha prayed for this young man, I pray for you, “Open their eyes that they may see.” You are learning to cook and how to keep a house. And I’m so proud of you, and I know that your parents are, too. But I pray that you will see beyond the fun activities that you are doing now. I pray you will have a bigger vision, heaven’s vision. For you see, the Lord is preparing you to be a wife and mother some day. He’s also preparing a husband for your and He wants you to wait for that very special Godly man He has for you.
