Life’s Speed Limits

“He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul.” Psalm 23:2 – 3 (NKJV)

Speed limit signs are posted all along our streets and highways, but they are routinely ignored. Neither the threat of a traffic ticket, nor the high cost of gasoline seems to deter many people from speeding.

Rush hour is not limited to the morning and evening commute; it has become a way of life as time-strapped people hurry on their way.

Why all this rushing about? Are we such an impatient people? Or has an over-stuffed calendar pushed us to speed through life?

We ignore speed limits at our own peril. Ignoring them on the highway often leads to horrific accidents. Ignoring them in daily living leads to stressed-out, exhausted people whose crowded schedule leaves little time for prayer, mediation, rest, or abiding in the Lord.

Our Lord has given us some speed limits for living. Like highway signs, these limits are for our own good. Here are a few to prayerfully consider:

“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you… Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Matthew 6:33-34

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.” John 15:4

“Mary… sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word.” Luke 10:39

“Lord, make me to know my end, and what is the measure of my days, that I may know how frail I am.”  Psalm 39:4

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work.” Exodus 20:8 – 10

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6 – 7

Lord, help us to reconsider our high-speed lifestyle. Help us to plan our days so we will please You, rather than trying to please others. Teach us to measure our activities in light of eternity and surrender our priorities to You. May our calendars reflect Your will so that one day, as we stand before You, we will give a good account of our time on earth. Amen.
